2005 (and before) Book List
I'm an avid reader (why is "avid" always associated with "reader" instead of "wacky" or "obsessed" or "relentless"?)
and I'm always exchanging my favorite books with others, so I thought I'd create a shortcut and build a web page
dedicated to my favorite books and authors of my life. Each year I'll try and post an update of things that are
great to read that I've discovered in the last year. We'll see if I follow through.
Modern Fiction
- Chuck Palahniuk - Author of Fight Club. I've read every novel he's written. I'd recommend starting with either Survivor or Invisible Monsters
- Tom Robbins - I think I've read the canon here as well. Skinny Legs and All is the best starter, though Half Asleep in Frog Pajamas is my favorite even though most other Robbins fans consider it their least favorite.
- Hideki Murakami - My one mistake with Murakami was that I read everything of his much too fast. Should have slowed down. Hard Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World has to be the place to start since that's where I started.
- Jonathon Lethem - Possibly one of my top ten all time is As She Climbed Across The Table. But everything else, especially Gun, With Occassional Music are worth reading.
- Nick Hornsby - Yeah, he's sappy at times, and having Fever Pitch turned into a Red Sox comedy is a travesty.
- Jonathon Morrow - Read Towing Jehovah and keep going from there if you like it. Not for those who would get touchy with religious topics.
- Jonathon Saffron Foer - This guy is wicked smart and incredibly creative. Everything Is Illuminated is his first. It's brilliant.
- Christopher Buckley - Comedy. Not for the politically one-sided who can't laugh at the liberal side of our country.
- Chris Moore - Read The Gospel According to Biff. Again, not for those who are touchy about religion.
Favorite Fiction Authors
- Twain, Hemmingway, and Vonnegut - my three favorite white haired old men who view the world with amazement, sorrow, sarcasm, and who could never escape the dark side of the world we live in
Recent Favorites
- Complications by Atul Gawande - Non-fiction, about the paradoxes in medice.
- Blindness by Jose Saramago - Fiction. Unusual writing style with killer insights into human nature. Lord of the Flies in an adult setting.
- Bel Canto by Anne Patchet - Very similar to Blindness in style. Great, great read.
